Haiti Earthquake Relief

The response of people worldwide--Lutherans included--has been amazingly generous. We are so thankful to you and other generous LCMS members who have already sacrificed and given more than $300,000 for the people of Haiti through our effort, spearheaded by LCMS World Relief and Human Care (WR-HC) and LCMS World Mission, both in St. Louis. Other gifts are being made through Lutheran World Relief (LWR) in Baltimore. These contributions and others will help us meet the short- and long-term needs of our partners in Haiti, including our partner church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti.

Learn of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' decision to match Lutheran donations - $1 for every $2 dollars given - from its members.  (Note that the maximum gift is $250 per member for donations accepted through March 31, 2010. See www.thrivent.com for details about the "Helping Haiti" campaign.) The Thrivent Financial campaign could help generate $3 million for much-needed assistance to Haiti. Praise be to God!

A material donations collection has been arranged. We, and our Lutheran partners, are seeking food, water, medical, and hygiene items within the next two weeks for shipment to Haiti via two Florida churches with deep ties to the Caribbean nation. See LCMS World Relief and Human Care for more information, a requested item lists, and shipment addresses.

Please prayerfully consider these opportunities through which you and your congregation might respond with financial contributions and material donations to help the Haitian people.

As you know, the LCMS is working cooperatively through LCMS World Relief and Human Care and LCMS World Mission, both here at the International Center in St. Louis, Lutheran World Relief in Baltimore, Concordia Publishing House, and our U.S. and Haitian partners to serve the ongoing needs of the people of Haiti who have lost loved ones, homes, possessions, and means of livelihood as a result of this devastating natural disaster.Our material donation drive is a joint effort of LCMS WR-HC, the LCMS Florida-Georgia District, MISSION: HAITI, and Orphan Grain Train. Through grants, LCMS WR-HC will assist with shipping charges.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti as well as Orphan Grain Train and MISSION: HAITI partners in Haiti will receive the containers of donations in Port-au-Prince and oversee their distribution.
